The Vashon Community Cookbooks are here! The cookbook is a compilation from Vashon Island Students in the Vashon School District as well as local restaurants and farms. The artwork is from students and local Vashon Island artists. Cookbooks can be purchased for $25. All proceeds for to the Vashon PTSA.

Vashon Community PTSA is made up of all kinds of islanders; parents, grandparents, students, teachers, school staff, and concerned citizens who want to help make our schools top notch. Its members are people who realize that the quality of a community’s education directly affects the caliber of its citizens. Vashon PTSA is your voice in the schools and your representation with the State PTA’s important legislative issues.

See detailed information below what Vashon PTSA does in our school community.  Vashon PTSA is unique in that the one organization covers all three Vashon public schools - Chautauqua Elementary, McMurray, and Vashon High School.

What Vashon PTSA Does:

  • Doors of Opportunity Award - Each year one faculty member is awarded $2000 recognizing excellence, $1000 for their classroom and $1000 for personal use.
  • PTSA Monthly Site Councils – At CES, McM and VHS.  They participate in Principal-run site council meetings consisting of teachers, select students, PTSA site person(s), and school administration.  The PTSA Site Council person(s) then report back to the PTSA board.
  • Staff Appreciation – PTSA provides lunches, gifts to school staff and help with special projects to add value to the teaching environment
  • Bus Driver Appreciation – Thank you gift and a meal are provided for the bus drivers each year.
  • Scholarships - PTSA awards a scholarship to 2 high school seniors each a each year. 
  • Volunteer Coordination - We help coordinate volunteer work in the schools. 
  • Course curriculum, books and teacher training - Vashon PTSA has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years to help the district purchase course curriculum, books and teacher training.

Chautauqua Elementary School (CES): 

  • CES Pajama/Harvest Party/Family Fun Night – provide games, stuffy swap, movie viewing, dance party, snacks, etc.
  • CES Movie Night – set up date with theatre and provide movie
  • CES Open House – introduce PTSA to parents, staff table to answer questions and sign up members
  • CES Staff Support – assist in getting “home parents” for teachers
  • CES Lice Squad – provide regular, free lice checks for students and families
  • CES Back to School Social – organize snacks, games and opportunity to meet teachers
  • CES Book Fair – organize book sales and book donations to classrooms
  • CES Field Day – assist staff with volunteers to run games, provide a bouncy house and snacks
  • CES Orca Readers – provide slips to count time read and rewards in the form of books and toys for meeting goals
  • CES Camp Waskowitz – PTSA raises and provides several thousand dollars to subsidize the expense for the 5th graders to go to camp.
  • PTSA Robotics - See below in McM.
  • PTSA Family Science Nights - An evening of hands-on science fun for the whole family.  Now run by the two PTSA high school robotics teams.  2-3 times per year they provide

McMurray Middle School (McM):

  •  McM Movie Night – set up date with theater and provide movie and chaperones
  • McM Tech Club
  • McM Science Fair
  • McM Snow cone Fridays
  • McM Book Fair
  • PTSA Lego Robotics - Launched in 2007, we run a competitive robotics program that participates in the FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics Competition. Teams of students, grades 5-8,  build/program robots to play a game and compete against other teams from around the state.


Vashon High School (VHS):                                                                                                              

  • VHS Film Festival

  • PTSA High School Robotics - Launched in 2009, PTSA runs the after-school program heading up two VHS competitive robotics teams that participate in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics Competition. Students build/program a robot to play a sports-like game against other teams from around the state.
